The Metasequoia genus has been preserved in fossils as old as 50 million years. M. glyptostroboides was discovered in the wild in China in 1941, and it is the only species in this genus.

This large growing, deciduous conifer may reach heights of 60 feet and 25 feet wide. A fast grower, reaching 50 feet in just 15 or 20 years.
Once thought to be extinct, Dawn redwood was discovered in 1944 in China, soon after million year old fossils from Metasequoias were found in Japan. This tree grew on the North American continent over 15 million years ago.

Two insignificant specimens grow near the dawn redwoods on the path leading into Frost Amphitheater at its southeast corner. A full-grown specimen may be detected in summer on Cabrillo Avenue near Dolores Street.
Their cousins the dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), and Sierra redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are far superior as isolated specimen trees, but can also look splendid in a grove.
