Delphinium or Larkspur are closely related to Monkshoots (Aconitum spp.). The genus covers annuals as well as biannual and perennial species with sometimes very tall, most ornamental flower spikes above a basal rosette of divided leaves.

This Delphinium is an annual, with a hairy stem and hairy palmate leaves, composed of five to seven oblong lobes, which have frequently one or two acute indentures on their sides.

rolfsii and is most familiar as southern wilt of delphinium or crown rot of bulbous iris. The fungus produces characteristic round brown or reddish resting bodies, the sclerotia, which resemble turnip or cabbage seeds.

In moist corners of partial shade, deep blue monkshood (Aconitum napellus, one metre, Zone 3) sends up its long-lasting, delphinium-like spikes of flowers that are both beautiful and toxic (so keep it away from small children and plant-chewing pets).

In the violet the calycine segments are prolonged downwards beyond their insertions, and in the Indian cress (Tropaeolum) this prolongation is in the form of a spur (calcar), formed by three sepals; in Delphinium it is formed by one.

There are flowers to suit every taste, from delicate little blooms such as Gypsophila to large spiky heads of delphiniums. There foliage is also very diverse with every range from delicate fronds of ferns to the giant leaves of gunnera species.

Flowers look like miniature Delphiniums that appear in summer. Cuttings will flower in about 6 to 8 weeks if given proper light and warmth.

But roses, carnations, lilies and orchids all lack a class of blue pigments called delphinidins, named after the violet-blue we see in delphinium.

This is a wonderful summer plant with lemon yellow daisy flowers that last over a long period in summer. The finely dissected, dark green foliage is an excellent foil for the flowers. You might grow this in front of blue or white delphiniums.
