Deodar Cedars unite the relaxed, drooping posture of hemlocks and the massive horizontal sturdiness of certain pines, whether yielding valuable wood in Indian forests or graciously decorating our landscapes.

 


Deodara cedar is a finicky tree to grow. Like most conifers it requires excellent drainage to prosper. But unlike many other members of the pine family, to which the true cedars belong, Deodara cedar should have a good, fertile soil.

Deodars are often used in landscapes along the United States West Coast and other mild winter areas - this graceful individual inhabits a park in southern Germany (Zone 7).

The Deodar cedar is native of India & the western Himalayas. It is one of the few true cedars, among which the most famous is the Cedar of Lebanon ( ). The Deodar's blue-grey needles are softer than those on Cedrus atlantica.

General Notes
Drought tolerant, although several years of drought has stressed a considerable number to the extent of killing them. A weeping cultivar, 'pendula', can be espaliered. Has Fragrant Bark and Leaf.

Cedrus deodara: Deodar cedar, Indian cedar - the largest cedar, it is reputed to grow up to 250 feet in Afghanistan. It has deep green 1 1/2 inch long needles which may turn gray in hot, dry areas.

In the front yard, curving beds repeat the forms of the arched windows and doorways of the house and are partially shaded by a deodar cedar (Cedrus deodara) and a large crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica).

The barrel-shaped cones are held upright above a branch. Some cedars include: Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani); Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica) - with blue-green foliage; Deodar cedar (Cedrus deodara) - with drooping branches.

Rare in Lebanon, only 5000-7000 acres (2000-3000 ha) of forest remain in small patches across the country. However, it is still plentiful in Turkey. There are only three species of Cedars in the world: the Lebanon cedar, the Deodar of the Himalayas ...

In the Himalaya occur Cedrus deodara, Taxus, species of Cupressus, Finns excelsa, Abies Webbiana, &c. The continent of Africa is singularly poor in conifers.
