The Dogwood family consists of 12 genera and 100 species around the world, but only the dogwood genus (Cornus) is native to North America. The dogwoods are trees, shrubs or woody plants with opposite or apparently whorled leaves.

This dogwood can be classified as either a deciduous shrub or small tree. Appealing creamy white flowers appear in late spring and become attractive clusters of milky white fruit in fall.

Eastern dogwood is an extremely hardy species. It can succeed in any soil of good or moderate fertility and can withstand temperatures down to -13° F (-25°C). The wood is heavy, strong, and extremely shock resistant.

Chinese dogwoods can sometimes be slow to flower. If grown from seed, it is not unusual for trees to take seven to 10 years to reach maturity and become old enough to bloom.

Red-twig dogwood grows in forests from Newfoundland to Alaska & south through the Rockies & into California. It is highly cold-tolerant, disease resistant, with rapid growth, at risk only if soil is insuffuciently moist.

Description:
Kousa Dogwood, spectacular when in flower in early June, also displays its vased to arching growth habit year-round. This ornamental tree is also known by the common names of Chinese Dogwood or Japanese Dogwood.

She started by planting birches (Betula jacquemontii), dogwoods, a saucer magnolia, and a tapestry of shrubs, since they would cover the slope and supplant weeds (and take the longest to fill in).
