Form of doubles
To simply appreciate the exquisite beauty of double flowers it is not necessary to know the intricacies of their form. However, an even greater appreciation of double daylilies will result from understanding the way they are made.

 


Doubles. Grandifloras, multifloras, and some trailing types are available with double flowers. All of these novelties, but especially the trailers, are striking in mass plantings.

In addition to the fruit it provides, the shrub also doubles handsomely as a landscape specimen. When planted close together, the shrubs make a nice hedge, screen, or windbreak. Feijoas can also be espaliered or trained as a small tree (20 to 25 ft.

The single sorts may be readily grown from seed sown in the open air in April, and, being varied in fine color, they deserve to be cultivated even more than many of the doubles.

A lesser-known rugosa rose but one of the best of the crimson doubles, 'Dart's Dash' has large, fragrant blossoms with a typical spicy rugosa perfume. Its flowers are followed by the best and biggest display of showy hips of any rugosa available.

Semi-double flowers have one or two extra rows of petals; doubles have more. Their inner petals are generally very like the outer ones in colour and patterning.

The flowers are doubles, pinkish white or white often appearing during a warm spell in winter or early spring. The form of this tree is more like the true subhirtella.

Expanding a single ring of ray petals around a central disc, the species is less effective than semi-doubles such as H. h. 'Patula' or 'Ballerina', and H. h. ssp. scabra 'Sommersonne' syn. 'Summer Sun', with their extra layers of petals.

There are also doubles known as Azalea Flowered. G. amoena is taller and slenderer (2 to 2 ½ ft.) and has a similar colour range. The two species have been crossed to produce the very popular tall doubles.

The basic petunia flower is funnel shape, but hybridizers have created many variations including singles and doubles with petals that have wavy or fringed margins.

The botanical garden not only functions as a display area, but doubles as a research and development facility.

No other flowering plant can give such a diversity of flowering types - singles, semi-doubles, doubles, peony types and some with pompom centers. Yet others have shaggy flowers, with center petals whorled and twisted.

This is one of the best doubles for the South.
'Miss America' has snow white petals that open to a full early semi-double. It is a heavy bloomer.
'Monsieur Jules Elie' has double pink flowers with silvery centers.

Good single varieties besides the Princess of Wales are Wellsiana, La France, Admiral Avellan and California, and among the doubles Mrs. J. J.

Flowers are wide, 5-8 cm, tubular, in large clusters (trusses), from rounded to spreading, 18-30 flowers, usually fragrant, some doubles. Colors range from near white, orange, pink to vivid red. They bloom in mid to late season.
