Dutch Iris - A new race of bulbous Irises is known by this name. They are earlier than the Spanish sorts, larger, and with bolder and handsomer flowers.

Dutch iris makes an excellent spring container plant. Pot up bulbs in autumn and stage the container in spring when the iris comes into bloom. When flowers finish blooming, whisk the pot away to a hidden spot to allow the foliage to ripen.

Dutch irises flower in spring, before the tall bearded irises but at the same time as many of the Spanish irises. Both should be lifted at least every two or three years, just when the foliage is drying off, and left to dry in a shady place.

Flowers are shaped more like a Dutch iris and usually appear in June, just as the bearded iris pass. Colors include blue, purple, purple-red and white; 'Caesar's Brother' is blue and 'Snow Queen' is white. All make excellent cut flowers.

xiphiodes. This species is also known as the Small Bulbous-rooted Iris and many hybrids are known as Dutch Iris. The Spanish Iris is favoured by florists for its striking colour combinations.

Early to late-spring bloomers include most varieties of grape hyacinths, tulips, daffodils, fritillaria and common hyacinths. Late spring to early summer bloomers include alliums, bearded iris, and Dutch iris.
