Eastern Redbud
Scientific Name: Cercis canadensis L.
Synonym:
Family: Fabaceae ...

Eastern Redbud, Judas Tree
Spring brings a profusion of white, pink or red flower clusters that bloom as the leaves unfold or just before. Red-brown, flat seedpods that follow in summer last through winter.

The Eastern Redbud produces an extremly attractive rosy-pink flower in the spring just before the dark green heart-shaped leaves begin to emerge. The Redbud generally blooms earlier than most plants providing some early spring color.

This small, often multi-stemmed native tree is a delight in spring when tiny, pink flowers cloak its dark, low-sweeping branches.

General Notes
Eastern Redbud is a commonly used single or multi-trunk tree, effective as a flowering or foliage accent, in lawns or residential garden settings. Leaves are an attractive lemon in fall.

Eastern redbud growing in the wild typically has multiple trunks and often forms small groves as seen here.

See eastern redbuds on Santa Teresa Street at the New Guinea Garden, and between the McCullough and Gordon and Betty Moore buildings with western redbud. In Palo Alto, a specimen at 1031 Hamilton Avenue is actually around the corner on Chaucer Street.
