Eastern White Pine
(Pinus strobus L.)
LEAVES: Evergreen needles in clusters of 5, soft flexible, 3-sided, 2½"-5" long, and bluish green. This is the only pine native to Pennsylvania with 5 needles per cluster.

 


Eastern White Pine
The many forms and types of pines can be found in northern temperate zones and on mountains in the tropics. Some grow rapidly, others slowly. Some have silvery foliage, others are dark green.

Eastern White Pine PI-nus STRO-bus
Conifer, evergreen tree, 30-60 ft (9-18 m), in youth a symmetrical pyramid, open, soft, pleasant appearance; with age, is composed of several horizontal and ascending branches.

Eastern White Pine is a tall tree with 3-5.5" needles. Its bark starts smooth and gray, and as it ages the bark becomes black and cracked and the crown becomes irregular.

Often associated with coniferous trees, most typically Eastern White Pine.

White Pine Blister Rust affects the Eastern White Pine. The fungus, Cronartium ribicola, causes the disease. The fungus has five stages, two of which are completed in the pine and three are completed in nearby host plants.
