Surface sow seed indoors at 60-70F/15-21C; needs light to germinate, or start outdoors late in spring. Sun to light shade and dry, light, sandy soil; heat and drought tolerant.

This globe thistle has dramatic, metallic-blue round, architectural, spiky blooms. (60 cm - 24"). Blooms June to September. Average to moist, well-drained soil. Zone 3.

They form clumps of deeply divided, spiny leaves, which are gray-green above and fuzzy-white beneath.

Echinopsis chamaecereus, pictured above, blooms easily indoors. You can expect orange-red blooms in spring or early summer.

ECHINOPS Commonly called the Globe Thistle. Bears thistle-like flowering balls blue in colour on stems 1 to 1.5 m (3 to 5 ft) tall from August till September. Look well near gypsophila. My favourite, Ritro.

Globe Thistle (Echinops) - A fine hardy plant from S. Russia, 3 to 5 feet high, covered with a silvery down, E. ruthenicus having the flowers blue, in round heads. Thrives in ordinary soil.

In my opinion there is no better smelling flower than that of the Easter Lily cactus (Echinopsis hybrids). Although you may not get overly excited about growing more cacti, I had to point this beauty out to you.
