Elderberry Trees
Elderberry trees thrive in moist, slightly acidic soil. They make wonderful additions to bird and wildlife gardens. Many species of songbirds love elderberries and will enjoy these tasty treats.
Elder is a plant with strong therapeutic effects which can be used to treat and prevent a great number of diseases. Many legends formed around elder, one of them stating that Judas hung himself from an elder tree.

Black elder forms an upright and bushy, but somewhat coarse, shrub with toothed green leaves. It bears scented, flattened clusters of white flowers in early summer, which mature into glossy black fruit.

The problem
Spreading by rhizomes, ground elder can easily creep in from a neighbouring garden or nearby wasteland.
American elder is a bushy, multi-stemmed, wide spreading shrub with deciduous compound leaves. It gets 3-4 m tall with a similar spread, and its brittle branches are pithy and soft.

This form of the unassuming box elder that has attractively variegated leaves has matt green foliage with a broad, irregular white margin which is a creamy yellow in the first part of the year.
