Elderberry Trees
Elderberry trees thrive in moist, slightly acidic soil. They make wonderful additions to bird and wildlife gardens. Many species of songbirds love elderberries and will enjoy these tasty treats.

 


Elderberry is a well-known small tree. This native prefers wetland sites including hammocks, floodplain forests, swamps and wet, disturbed disturbed places. It is common nearly throughout Florida (Wunderlin, 2003).

3 (5)m, Red Elderberry is a woody deciduous shrub from mountainous regions in Central Europe with broadly feathered leaves, greenish-white flowers and most ornamental red berries (not edible) in dense terminal culsters.

Elderberry was sacred in Saxony. It could not be cut down unless propitiated.

Black Beautyâ"¢ elderberry is a deciduous shrub with finely cut dark foliage. It requires regular watering during its first few years in the landscape but will become more drought tolerant as it becomes better established.

Usage

Elderberry wine, made from the berries, is used in rituals. In Denmark, it is believed to be unlucky to have furniture made of elder wood. Grown near your home, elder will offer protection to the dwellers.

Obviously, size is a consideration-squeezing a large elderberry or lilac into a border through ruthless shrub pruning is not recommended. Fortunately, plant breeders introduce new compact shrubs each year, resulting in dozens of options.

The Romans used elderberry juice as a hair dye and elderflower water used in the 18th century to whiten the skin and remove freckles. Elder produces green, violet and black dyes. An infusion of the leaves is quite an effective insecticide.

Habitat
Mountain alder occurs in moist, nutrient-rich forests along streamsides and bogs. It often occurs as dense clumps with willows, twinberry, red elderberry, and horsetails.
Deer and hares sometimes eat parts of the stem.

Elderberry is used as an immune booster, perhaps supported by the presence of anthocyanidins in the berries (chemical compounds that are known to have immunostimulant effects).
