Chinese Elm - Ulmus parvifolia
General Information:Chinese elm is fast growing, deciduous or evergreen depending on its location, forms a graceful upright rounded canopy with shiny, dark green leathery leaves. elm is moderatly salt tolerant.
Dutch Elm Disease is caused by a fungus that is spread by elm bark beetles infected with Ophiostoma ulmi. The disease was originally brought to the United States via elm burl logs to be used for furniture veneer.
The Elm family consists of a handful of trees and shrubs in the eastern and southern parts of the country, some of which are planted elsewhere as ornamentals. The leaves are simple and alternate, but often a little bit asymmetrical at the base.
Wych elm, sometimes known as Scotch elm, is distinguished from English elm by having shorter leaf-stalks and larger fruits. The seed is situated in the center of the wing and there is a notch that does not reach the seed.
Chinese Elm trees are very flexible about their environment. If adapted properly, they can be grown indoors year-round.

LEAVES: Alternate, simple, 5"-7" long; usually larger than those of American elm, rough on both sides or soft-hairy below; margin coarsely toothed. Petiole short.
Siberian elm grows up to 60 feet tall and 40 feet wide. Older trees have gray trunks with somewhat weeping branches and an open habit of growth. The tree is very fast growing. Its wood is brittle and very susceptible to breakage in ice storms.
The Cedar Elm is a slow growing semi evergreen or deciduous tree with dark leaves that turn a yellow-gold in fall and have a rough sand paper-like texture.
Seiju Dwarf Elm

A sport of the more petite Hokkaido with tiny foliage but larger growing to 7' with corky bark. An excellent choice for bonsai or as a small specimen tree. Very unusual.
The American elm tree is frequently found in floodplain forests from the northern coast to the central peninsula of Florida (Wunderlin, 2003).

DESCRIPTION: Siberian elm is a fast-growing tree in the elm family (Ulmaceae) distinguished by small toothed leaves about 1-2½ in (3-7 cm) long and half as wide, and pointed at the tip.
Additional Comments: Native Americans used slippery elm bark as a treatment for constipation and for diarrhoea. Mrs. Grieve notes that a pinch of the powder put in a hollow tooth stops a toothache and delays decay.
Ulmus parvifolia, or Chinese elm, a good bonsai species, if grown in containers should be brought in during winter; can be grown cool indoors. Ulmus procera, English elm, is equally suitable as bonsai, though also prone to Dutch elm disease.
This is a rare and choice yellow-leaved variant. Like the American Elm it is susceptible to Dutch Elm disease. Closely related to the English Elm.

SAMARA
A samara is a one-seeded fruit, winged, indehiscent fruit, like the seed of the maple and elm (which helicopter their way down from the tree). Samara is Latin for elm seed.

When immature the seedpods can be viscid and may be bitter; but they mature to a flavorless dry papery texture; they remind me of dry ripe seeds from elm trees.
