Euonymus alatus, known variously as Winged Spindle, Winged Euonymus or Burning Bush, is a deciduous shrub native to eastern Asia, in central and northern China, Japan, and Korea. The shrub grows to 2.

 


Euonymus (Spindle Berries) are large shrubs to small trees from open, slightly moist spots in woods throughout Europe to Japan. Very easy in cultivation, good to cut back.

Vining or creeping euonymus is seldom recommended as a groundcover due to the strong possibility of euonymus scale.
Plants develop whitish growth on stems and leaves, on the tops and bottom. Leaves become mottled, turning yellow.

DESCRIPTION: Climbing euonymus, also known as wintercreeper, Emerald'n Gold, and Gaiety, is an evergreen, clinging vine in the staff-tree (Celastraceae) family.

Euonymus are reliable plants that may be grown as groundcovers, shrubs or vines. Most of these broadleaf evergreens tolerate urban conditions and look good year-round, keeping their leaves throughout winter in milder parts of Canada.

There is an Euonymus bush here in southwest Oregon that goes red and green in early fall, quite beautiful. I do not know the specifics, but it IS euonymus.

My Variegated Euonymus has one branch with all-green leaves. What should I do?

Of the ground cover euonymus, Euonymus Emerald 'n Gold (green and yellow variegation), and Emerald Gaiety (white and gold variegation) are two favorites. These semi upright spreaders make large mats of evergreen color.

Field Marks: This shrub differs from other erect shrubs in the genus Euonymus by its short leaf stalks only 1/8 inch long. It differs from other associated species of shrubs by its green square twigs.

Medicinal uses:
The species has no significant medicinal uses.

Bittersweet belongs to the Celastraceae family and is a close relative of euonymus. It ranges from eastern Canada, throughout most of the eastern states to as far west as New Mexico. Smith shows it growing only in the Ozarks region of Arkansas.
