Deciduous tree, 50-60(100) ft [15-18(30) m], pyramidal to oval, dense. Bark smooth gray, developing an elephant hide appearance on old trunks. Buds narrow, long (2-2.5 cm), pointed.

Fagus sylvatica: European beech, common beech - This tree has the darkest gray bark and darkest green leaves of all the beeches. Common in both Europe and America, it grows to a height of 90 feet, with leaves of 3-4 inches. Hardy in zones 5-9.

The queen of the beech family is the imposing European beech (Fagus sylvatica), which is much less demanding and able to grow in both slightly acidic and alkaline soils. Smaller than the Ameri-can beech, it reaches a height of about 18 metres.
