FERNS - GROWING
Most ferns prefer a loose, organic soil; diffused or filtered light (north windows), high humidity and sufficient moisture to keep the soil from drying out. Excessive moisture can rot the plant.

As ferns are primitive plants, they do not have leaves but leaf-like structures called fronds, and it's their elegance that makes them so appealing.

Ferns
Sporangia of ferns develop in groups to form structures called sori (singular sorus) on the underside of the fern frond. Each sorus contains numerous sporangia. Some ferns have sori that are covered by leaf tissue called indusium.

Ferns make a shade garden. Their delicate, wispy fronds cool the mind almost as effectively as the air conditioner cools the body.

Ferns reproduce by an alternation of generations (see reproduction), the fern itself being the sporophyte, which produces asexual spores.

Ferns are the forgotten category of perennials for shady areas. We always marvel at them at zoos and botanical gardens, but when it comes to incorporating them into our landscape designs, they usually slip our minds.

Ferns for Shade Gardens
Appearances to the contrary, ferns are surprisingly hardy and easy to care for. Consider them for textural interest in a shady area of the garden.
