Blue fescue (Festuca ovina var. glauca) is a cool season, clump-forming perennial grass that grows about 10 inches tall and wide. The fine-textured leaves are thin and wiry and blue-gray in color.

Additional note: Fescue can accumulate nitrates under conditions of overfertilization (see the section on oats for more information on nitrate toxicosis).

Atlas fescue is at its best in groups and grows in all but hot, humid, and low desert climates.
Care: Provide full sun to light shade. It is tolerant of most any soil, but does not like extreme heat, cold, or humidity.

Festuca glauca is a well-behaved grass as long as you attend to deadheading. Otherwise, if you do not, be prepared to contend with many baby fescue seedlings.

Test Garden Tip: Clump-forming grasses, such as feather reedgrass or blue fescue, are best choices for vegetable gardens. Avoid running grasses such as ribbongrass that can become weedy if they spread too much.
