For example, Fescue grass produces its most productive grow (roots and tops) in the fall, so September and October are the best months to aerate fescue lawns.

It is important to remember that fine and tall fescue grasses are suited to the Upstate, while St. Augustinegrass, zoysiagrass, centipedegrass and bermudagrass are suited to the Midlands and Coastal Plains.

Fescue grasses are better at coping with shade, drought and poor nutrient levels. In damp soils opt for a mix with more bent grasses. However, bear in mind that even shade-tolerant grasses need some light.

When other grasses have turned straw-brown in winter, blue fescue remains steely blue. There are some 300 species of fescue grasses; all are perennial, and some are turf-forming and used in pastures and in cool-season lawn grass mixtures.
