Chemical composition of figwort
Aerial parts-bitter substances, saponins, diosmine, alkaloids, acids: caffeic, cumaric, ferulic. Sucrose, mannitol, mineral salts, etc.
The subterranean parts contain caffeic and cumaric acid, hydroxibenzene, etc.

Cape Figwort

Cape Figwort (Phygelius) - P. capensis, a Cape plant of some beauty, 3 or 4 feet high, and bearing racemes of brilliant scarlet flowers, which open in May and June and continue far into autumn.
YELLOW FIGWORT (S. vernalis) is a plant of local occurrence and is well distinguished by its remarkably bright green foliage and yellow flowers. It appears early in spring and is the only British species which can be called ornamental.

Field Marks: The combination of deeply pinnately lobed leaves and terminal spikes of 2-lipped yellow flowers distinguishes this species.
The name Figwort has nothing to do with figs but refers to the disease 'fig' or piles which the european species Scrophularia nodosa was once used to treat. The root was thought to resemble the swellings of piles which resemble figs.
It belongs to the Figwort Family and is related to the snapdragon.
This is a very interesting plant because it is semi-parasitic. It uses pickleweed and salt grass to extend its growing season.
The flowers of the figwort family are designed for bee pollination, and snapdragons are specially fitted with a landing pad, a door for entry and a reward for the bee when the task is completed.

They resemble other members of the figwort (Scrophulariaceae) family - snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) and foxglove(Digitalis purpurea).
Phygelius Capensis, or the Cape Figwort, has established itself as a firm favourite among gardeners who like something a little out of the ordinary.
