The flowering dogwood is wonderful at its best and in its homeland (eastern North America). It needs the right conditions to thrive and is happiest in Britain in the drier southeastern parts.

Flowering dogwood has opposite, deciduous midgreen leaves, 3-6 in (7.6-15 cm) long, which turn red and purple in autumn. Flowering dogwood blooms in the spring, as its new leaves are unfolding, and usually remains showy for 2-3 weeks.

Cornus ‘Eddie's White Wonder' Flowering Dogwood
A cross between C. Florida and C. nuttallii, ‘Eddie's White Wonder' is one of the most beautiful of all the flowering dogwoods.

This trait is evident in the flowering dogwood (C. florida) of E North America, with white or pink bracts, and the very similar Pacific dogwood (C. nuttallii) of the West.
