One of the earliest signs that spring has arrived, is when the Forsythia bursts into a profusion of yellow blossoms spreading from the ground to the tip of each graceful, cascading branch.

FORSYTHIA--PRUNING
Forsythia should be pruned after blooming each spring. Remove one- fourth (1/4) of the plant starting the fifth year after planting to encourage new basal shoots. Remove old wood at ground level.

Forsythia koreana dwarf variegated form
This is a dwarf form of forsythia typically growing to 3-4' high and wide. It is noted for it's beautifully golden edged foliage which provides the greatest interest.

The white forsythia is a deciduous shrub that produces small white flowers in terminal racemes in very early spring. Plants grow 5 feet tall and wide and produce opposite, abelia-like leaves.

Salvia madrensis (Forsythia sage) Salvia madrensis is a high elevation Mexican salvia that makes a large clump, whose exaggerated square green stems reach 7' tall by the time it bursts into flower in late September.

Forsythia and viburnum are two good examples. A branch or twig pushed into the ground will root in a matter of weeks, but there are certain processes which help to provide ideal conditions for the cutting to root.

Plants commonly affected include delphiniums, euphorbias, forsythia, foxgloves, lilies, primulas and Veronicastrum.
Fasciation is unpredictable and is usually limited to a single stem.

Jin Yin Hua (Japanese Honeysuckle, Flos Lonicerae Japonicae) is notable for its inclusion in the traditional Chinese medicine herbal formula Honeysuckle and Forsythia Powder. In pinyin, this formula is called Yin Qiao San.

Before the forsythias bloom, the plants cover themselves in a haze of small bright yellow flowers. In late summer or early fall, the large red fruits are an enticing sight. They are also delicious, reminiscent of tart cherries.

Some plants, you just cannot grow from seed for practical purposes. Take for instance, the very common Forsythia.

Flowers are profuse, showy, yellow and fragrant, resemble Forsythia in bloom. It makes a prolific production of pea-sized or larger, glossy brownish-purple, bland-flavored berries with persistent style, that resemble American gooseberry when cooked.

Forsythia with its early spring flowers looks bland the rest of the growing season. Add a summer or fall blooming clematis to the fountain shaped shrub and watch bland transform to grand when the clematis covers it in flowers.
