Chinese Foxglove is botanically not related to the real Foxglove (Digitalis), but with Ramonda and Haberlea, both from the Gesneriad family (Gesneriaceae).

Foxglove blooms during early summer in various shades of shell pink, rose, cream and white, with contrasting freckles. They are natives of Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa.

This foxglove has long-lasting flowers in seductive shades of burnt umber. Its glossy, linear leaves are evergreen in mild climates, but turn brown in colder climates.

False foxgloves have distinctive seed capsules.
Smooth false foxglove leaves. The larger leaf is from the lower part of the stem, and the small, undivided leaf from the upper stem.

Chinese foxgloves grow best in light shade, but can handle full sun if there is sufficient water. They are more drought tolerant in the shade.

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is an attractive biennial plant that is cultivated in Canada and is naturalized in several provinces. Upon ingestion, this plant can cause toxic reactions that lead to severe sickness and death in animals and in humans.

Foxglove is very variable throughout its natural range, and several subspecies, varieties and forms have been named. Gardeners have produced several hybrids, and many cultivars have been selected. 'Alba' has white flowers.

They do not have the same cumulative effect as those present in foxglove (Digitalis spp.)[254]. The bulb has been widely used by herbalists, mainly for its effect upon the heart and for its stimulating, expectorant and diuretic properties[4].

They sometimes retain the gold throughout the summer, or may turn green so that the foxglove-like white flowers, (if the weather is warm enough to entice them out), are seen against greenish foliage.
