any plant of the genus Fragaria of the family Rosaceae (rose family), low herbaceous perennials with edible red fruits, native to temperate and mountainous tropical regions.

(2003) provide a phylogeny of Rosoideae; Alchelmilla, Fragaria, and other genera form a well-supported clade outside Potentilla and relatives (see also Dobes & Paule 2010). Filipendula is sister to other Rosoideae.

Red Stele Root Rot or Phytophthora Root Rot: The fungi Phytophthora fragariae and P. cactorum cause this major disease. Plants with severe root rot are often stunted and they may wilt in hot weather.
