Freesia alba is a species of flowering plant in the iris family. It is native to South Africa, but this species and hybrids are known on other continents where they have been introduced.

May be started from seed in spring: soak 24 hours in warm water, then sow in peaty soil, 1/4" deep, 65F/18C. Sprouting is erratic. Good drainage and rich, sandy soil required.

Freesia flower is often sold as cut flowers in florist's shops.

Freesia (Freesia alba x Freesia leichtlinii) is probably of most concern in Western Australia, where it is ranked as a high priority species in the state's environmental weed strategy.

Freesias are very popular garden plants, grown for their often strongly scented flowers. The most commonly cultivated species is F. refracta, which was crossed with F. leichtlinii in the 19th century.

Freesias are tender South African natives that do not always establish well, as the corms do not like to freeze in winter. When to plant the corms is very zone-dependent.

Freesia (wild and cultivated, usually in April and May).
Naturalized, they are absolutely stunning.
Some are large, others are small.

These are fragrant and colorful pot plants increasingly favored by florists. In the mild-winter West, freesias are planted in the fall. But they remain available into February, although usually only as colors rather than named varieties.

Freesia Golden Yellow Queen of fragrance. Plant bulbs outdoors in late spring in a sheltered spot in full sun. Ht 16ins 40cm.

Feed freesias while they are in bloom to encourage healthy leaf growth and good flowers. This extra attention will repay you next year with more and better flowers.

Irises belong to the family Iridaceae which includes freesias and gladioli, plants that, to the casual observer, have nothing in common with the iris.

Arching spikes of crimson-splashed bright orange freesia-like flowers appear in August and October among sword-like mid-green leaves. These magnificent montbretia are perfect for a mixed border in a sheltered, sunny site.
