Fritillaria Meleagris (Linn.), the Snake's Head Fritillary, is a native of Great Britain, found in meadows and pastures in the southern and eastern counties of England, chiefly in Oxfordshire.

This is one of the hosts for the Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) caterpillars. The bright yellow eggs are followed by incredibly hungry caterpillars that can defoliate rapidly the vine.

In fact this plant is a natural habitat for the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly, which will eat the foliage. The fruit is a yellow ovoid shape, it is edible if you can get to it before the wildlife does.

The gulf fritillary is especially fond of this plant. Mature fritallaries deposit pinhead sized orange eggs on the leaves that hatch into ravenous caterpillars that will put the bite on the vine in short order.

Care should be taken as it is a good host plant for caterpillars and their butterflies, especially the Gulf Fritillary. There are over 460 known species of Passiflora.
