The common snowdrop is one of the most popular of all cultivated bulbous plants, and its flowering is traditionally seen to herald the end of winter.

In early fall, set bulbs into rich, organic soil, well-drained soil, partial shade, some 2" deep; may be naturalized in grass. Divide after flowers die back in spring, and replant immediately.

Galanthus nivalis grow well in zones 3 through 7. They are one of the earliest blooming flowers in the spring, often peeking up through the snow as early as February. They do best in well-drained soils and are well adapted to rock gardens.

Others think it might have been snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis ), whose genus name means milk flower, quite in accord with Homer's description: galakti de eikelon anthos [γάÎ"ακÏ"ι δὲ εἴκεÎ"ον á¼"νθος] yet the flower (was) like milk.
