Much-loved aromatic plants, the perennial and shrubby Sages are grown for their huge variety of flower colors and their long bloom.

Dwarf garden sage (Salvia officinalis 'Compacta'): Smaller leaves and more compact habit than regular sage, growing only 10 inches high. Same sage flavor. Propagated by cuttings only; seeds are unavailable.

Location
Garden sage originates from the Mediterranean region of north Africa, Spain and the Balkans. It has been grown as a medicinal and culinary herb for thousands of years, and can now be found in gardens everywhere.

Common Sage, or Garden sage, grows in the wild in the Mediterranean region. There are over 750 species grown all over the world. Like many herbs, it is also considered a flower. It grows as a shrub.

Salvia officinalis (Garden Sage)

Common Clary, like the Garden Sage, is not a native of Great Britain, having first been introduced into English cultivation in the year 1562.

Salvia officinalis is the common garden sage widely known and used as a culinary herb in poultry stuffing, omellettes, soups and bean dishes. It is also used as a medicinal herb.

The 2-4 inch (5-10 cm) long ovate leaves have the scent of pineapple when crushed and are used fresh or dry as a seasoning. Salvia elegans has a milder and fruitier taste than garden sage.
