Garlic Chives

A hardy perennial plant, garlic chives (Chinese Chives, Nira) are commonly used as a herb in stir-fry cooking . The flat, dark green, grass-like leaves have a flavour somewhere between garlic and onion.

 


A close relative of ordinary chives and used in just the same way to flavour cooking, garlic chives have flattened strappy leaves and a pleasantly garlicky taste, particularly when leaves are snipped off young.

Easy to grow, edible members of this diverse family include Onions, Garlic, Shallots, Leeks, Green Onions and Chives. Leaves grow best in cool weather and moist soil.

Garlic chives is a fast growing and fast spreading perennial that needs to be divided every 3-4 years. Maintain it as a permanent crop, and harvest individual leaves as needed.

Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum) produce long, flat leaves with a mild garlic flavor. In late summer, they produce showy white blossoms. Garlic chives thrive in full sun. They often reseed prolifically.

They are closely related to garlic, onions, shallots, leeks and garlic chives. Though the leaves off all these plants have the distinctive onion smell, the flowers do smell like their sweeter lily relatives.

Best culinary varieties: Chives (A. schoenoprasum); all zones. Chinese or garlic chives (A. tuberosum); zones 1-24, H1-H2.
Growing tip: Increase the number of plants by dividing in winter every two years or so.

Growing just 6-10 inches, chives are perfect in window boxes or containers on patios or decks. It's cousin, Garlic Chives, grows a little bigger and has a white flower.

White to light pink or rich amethyst flowers are suspended on 60-centimetre-tall stalks that curve at the tips in July and August. Garlic-flavoured, strap-like foliage can be used like garlic chives. Drought-tolerant once established. Zone 5.
