Vascular pits in Gelsemium are not vestured (Rogers 1986), those of Pteleocarpa are. The latter also has mainly apotracheal parenchyma in unilateral, uniseriate bands and fibre tracheids with bordered pits (Gottwald 1982).

Yellow jessamine is frequently found growing in flatwoods and hammocks from the northern counties of Florida south to the central peninsula. It blooms in winter through spring. There are two species of Gelsemium in Florida (Wunderlin, 2003).
