Marsh Gentian or Marsh Felwort are biannual to perennial relatives of true Gentians (Gentiana), growing in humus rich, leafy, slightly moist soils in C Europe to Asia and N America.
Willow gentian (G. asclepiadea, zone 5)
Coming from a family of shorties, the willow gentian (its name derived from its long, narrow leaves resembling those of a willow) is something of an oddball, growing from 60 to 100 centimetres tall.
Gentians have opposite leaves that are sometimes arranged in a basal rosette, and trumpet-shaped flowers that are usually deep blue or azure, but may vary from white, creamy and yellow to red.

Description
Plant height: 5-30 cm tall.
Growth habit: tufted perennial, erect to creeping at base,
from fleshy thick roots, without rhizomes.
Stems: usually several, simple, hairless.
Greater fringed gentian flowers open on sunny days, but generally remain closed on cloudy days. Individual plants live for only one or two years.
Delphinium-type, pure gentian blue flowers on racemes, only the upper petals are fused together, unlike the perennial delphinium petals, which are separated.
