Giant reed is a non-native large grass. The rhizomes hard and thick; stems cane-like, tall, erect or leaning, to 20 ft. tall, 2 in. thick; leaf bladesnumerous, stiff, to 3 ft. long, to 2 in.

Giant Reed (Arundo donax): One of the largest grasses, giant reed grows 10 to 20 feet tall. Wide blue-green semi-evergreen to evergreen leaves are arranged along bamboo like stems. Large flower plumes appear in late fall. It can be invasive.

Giant reed (Arundo donax) is regarded as an environmental weed in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia and was recently listed as a priority environmental weed in at least one Natural Resource Management region.

Arundo donax 'Peppermint Stick' (Perennial Giant Reed Grass)
This wonderful deer-resistant grass, native to Mediterranean freshwater wetlands, has long been a favorite of gardeners.

Smaller and less hardy than the Giant Reed, this has white and green striped leaves. Good accent in back of flower borders or in large containers. Rejuvenate by cutting to the ground in spring.
