Not long after snow melt, Glacier Lilies are found in large showy colonies but they may also appear scattered through open woods and meadows.

A North American woodland delight, Dog Tooth Lily has been blessed with a variety of regional names: Avalanche Lily, Fawn Lily, Glacier Lily, Trout Lily, Dog Tooth Violet.

The names adder's-tongue and trout, fawn, snow, and glacier lily are also used interchangeably for the American species. Dogtooth violets (unrelated to the true violets) are sometimes cultivated as ornamentals.
