During the breeding season, the male exhibits a brilliant golden glow on his body and fins.
Females deposit up to 4,000 adhesive eggs over filamentous algae and submerged weed beds. After spawning, the eggs are abandoned.
A native North American plant, Helianthus decapetalus (Zone 4) is the titular head of a list of varieties; our Golden Glow may be H. d. 'Flore Pleno' (or perhaps a form of Rudbeckia).

'Green Gold' is a vigorous oldie but goodie with striking, predominantly silver leaves and deep green veining. New leaves project a warm golden glow and are outlined with a delicate burgundy edging.
In a sunny site in the North, the foliage will take on a golden glow, but in the South it takes on the look and feel of toast if it's planted in too much sunlight. For us, the foliage is more chartreuse than gold.
