Golden Rain

Golden Rain (Laburnum) - Flowering trees of Europe, of singular beauty, quite hardy and vigorous in our islands, and giving fine effects, all the more so if placed with some care as to position and surroundings.
Golden raintree, as a member of the soapberry family, has compound leaves with 13 to 19 leaflets per leaf. Like many members of this family it is adapted to dry difficult sites. It is winter hardy as far north as Chicago.

Reminiscent of Wisteria, these trees' pendulous, bright yellow flower clusters grow up to 20 inches long. Olive-green bark and bright green compound leaves add to their ornamental beauty.

Golden rain tree is quite adaptable to most soil conditions. It does best in loose, well drained soil with good watering, especially when young. It tolerates drought, alkaline soil, heat, wind, and air pollution.

At dusk the bees fly from their nests and defecate en masse, showering the surrounding ground and foliage with a golden rain. The nitrogen-rich bee feces fertilizes the tualang that hosts the bees, giving it life as it did for the prince.
Such common species as dogwood, golden raintree (Koelreuteria paniculata), Viburnum Lentago and mountain-ash provide limited areas of shade without growing out of bounds and each has one or more decorative features of flowers and/or fruit.
