This perennial woodland plant likes the deep shade of moist hillsides, the home of other important medicinal plans such as goldenseal and ginseng. It has robust, three-divided leaves, with three-lobed terminal leaflets.
A good example is goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis). Botanists estimate more than 6 million wild plants are dug each year. It's no wonder goldenseal is listed as endangered throughout its native range (Vermont to Alabama and west to Michigan).
Others, such as Elderberry and Goldenseal, really need to be kept fresh and undried for best performance. These we send in a small cellophane bag, buried in moist medium, in order to ensure good performance.
Oregon grape is used as a bitter tonic (it is related to the herb goldenseal), and has proved useful for treating skin problems, syphilis, dysentery and the like. Oregon grape also has been used to make a strong yellow dye.
It is an alkaloid called berberine (which powerful healing constituent is found also in goldenseal). Berberine stimulates bile secretions and modern herbalists and homeopaths believe it promotes good liver function and purifies the blood.
Goldenseal (Hydrastis) is a popular medicinal herb from this family. It is favored for the very bitter and highly antiseptic berberine alkaloid, also found in a few related genera and in the Barberry Family.
