Soil: Gooseberry plants are less finicky about soil acidity than most other small fruits, and tolerate a wide range of soils, except those that are waterlogged.

Cape gooseberry is a perennial, somewhat vining plant usually reaching 2-3 ft. in height. Under good conditions it can reach 6 ft, but will need support. The purplish, spreading branches are ribbed and covered with fine hairs.

In growth and foliage it resembles a Gooseberry. A densely-flowered bush is extremely pretty, and lasts in perfection a long time.

The difference between a currant and gooseberry is that the latter will goose you with its prickles, while the currants are disarmed. Yet Ribes lacustre's many common names include both. Nevertheless, this has lots of prickles along its stems.

Native to the area including Jasper Ridge, this early blooming gooseberry has greenish-white, pendent flowers, not as conspicuous as the red-blooming R. speciosum or rose-pink R. sanguineum.

The names "Currant" and "Gooseberry" are used interchangeably for various members of the Ribes genus, but no distinguishing characteristics help separate Currants from Gooseberries; what one person calls a Currant, another calls a Gooseberry.

It frequently grows with lodgepole pine, subalpine fir, aspen, birch, and willow. Oak fern, horsetail, and gooseberry often grow under white spruce. Lynx, snowshoe hares, wolves, and moose live in these northern forests.

BERRY
