Liliaceae / Lily Grape Hyacinth, Common (Muscari botryoides)
Plant Type: This is a non-native herbaceous plant, it is a perennial which can reach 20cm in height (8inches).
Leaves: This plant has basal leaves only.

Grape hyacinths are hardy, easy to grow, and have long-lasting blooms--no garden should be without them. 'Saffier' is a good candidate for beds and borders because it increases only by division.

It's hard to imagine a spring garden without a swath of grape hyacinths running through it. Cultivated for more than 400 years, Muscari botryoides originated in France and Italy.

Grape Hyacinths (Muscari species): The fragrant purple flower clusters resemble tiny clusters of grapes. Grape hyacinths are easy to grow, and naturalize quickly. They are early-blooming and are often interplanted with other spring bulbs.

The white or purple flowers resemble the spikes of large Grape Hyacinths and last well as cut flowers. Use these grasslike perennials as small-scale ground cover, edging and as accents around pools, dry stream beds and rock gardens.

In August plants send up spikes of blue flowers above the foliage that resemble the unique blue blooms of grape hyacinth - hence the species name. White-flowered forms are also available.

Other early bloomers include snowdrop, grape hyacinth and scilla.
