Needs good drainage. 'Marsh' is white fleshed. 'Ruby' and 'Rio Red' are red fleshed. Best in hot inland areas. Citrus grafted to sour organge root stock is resistant to Texas Root Rot.

Grapefruit is high in vitamin C, soluble fiber, and (especially the red varieties) lycopene. Grapefruit consumption has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels.

Standard-size orange and grapefruit trees grow 18 to 22 feet tall; dwarf varieties grow 8 to 12 feet tall. Most citrus trees begin to bear at three to six years. Pollination is generally accomplished by insects and sometimes by the wind.

Place traps, such as scooped out half orange, grapefruit or melon skins, laid cut side down, or jam jars part-filled with beer and sunk into the soil near vulnerable plants. Check and empty these regularly, preferably every morning.

Origin: Jamaica
It is sometimes confused with the pomelo (Citrus maxima), which is a close relation but is larger and pear-shaped. The grapefruit tree can grow to a height of 26 to 30 feet.

'Meyer' lemons, which are not as acid as the 'Eureka' lemons sold in stores, are also popular in homes, as are grapefruit (C. paradisi), kumquats (C. japonica), mandarins (C. reticulata), and limes (C. aurantifolia).

There are many different varieties of citrus, such as, grapefruits, lemons, limes, limequats, mandarin oranges (tangerines), oranges, etc.; however, they all need heat and need to be hardy plants in order to prosper.

Given good growing conditions seedlings can produce two foot tall stems with grapefruit size bases in a couple years. Under lower light conditions it's growth slows, but it will persist for years becoming more impressive with each passing season.

KUMQUATS
Kumquats are in the citrus family, though not in the Citrus genus which includes lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit. Kumquats look like miniature oranges with the size similar to a small cherry tomato.
