Grass Trees is an ancient, primitive genus with several species distributed throughout arid region in Australia. All make very long, grass like, usually nicely bluish-green colored leaves arranged in a dense rosette.

Grasses from cool climates such as Deschampsia, Festuca, Helictotrichon and Stipa come into growth in late winter and flower before mid-summer and so should be planted in autumn for the best establishment.

Switch Grass
This smooth, blue tinted grass can grow as tall as 4' and spreads slowly through it's rhizome growth forming clumps. It was selected for its glaucous blue color, and graceful fountain habit.

As a prefessional landscape designer I have come to rely on this plant for its form, seasonal interest, and hardiness in cold Jersey winters and humid, often dry summers.

Grass seed are characterized according to temperature. Cool season grasses are best suited to the northern half of the United States, while warm season grasses are best for the southern half of the US.

Grasses are a great accent plant for beds and borders. Here, a clump of fountaingrass subtly complements bold black-eyed Susans, canna, coleus, and petunia along a deck.

Buffelgrass is a shrubby grass up to 1.5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. It looks like a bunchgrass when small. Older plants branch profusely and densely at nodes, giving mature plants a messy appearance.

Mondo Grass is native to Korea and Japan. It has a fairly low growing habit and the leaves are somewhat finer on this species than other species. The flowers are hidden and insignificant, thus the plant is grown for its foliage and groundcover effect.

Zoysiagrass does best in full sun. While it is often touted as "more shade tolerant than bermudagrass", that comparison is meaningless because bermudagrass must have full sun all the time.

All the Grasses we promote are Perennial, very hardy and easy to grow. When planting, add a sprinkling of general fertilizer or liquid feed and mulch generously.

Fountain Grass
There is a wide variety of both annual and perennial ornamental grasses. Chances are, there's a variety to accent the landscape theme you are seeking to create. Some grow just a foot tall. Others can grow several feet tall.

Fountain grass is an understandably popular ornamental grass. It forms large clumps (3 to 4 feet high and the same diameter) with arching leaves draping to the ground. The late-summer flowers have the appearance of fox-tails. Photo Aug. 2000.

Ornamental grasses have become more available in recent years. Among the grasses suitable for moderately moist to moist gardens is feather reed grass. Its upright, wheat-like look and golden-buff winter color make it a four-season garden asset.

Black Mondo Grass
A relatively new cultivar, "Black Mondo grass" (Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens') is occasionally sold as "Arabicus," "Ebony Knight," or by the silly name "Black Dragon," but the name that is going to stick is Black Mondo Grass.
