'Greek Oregano', the variety usually used in Mediterranean cooking, is O. heracleoticum This is the type we associate with oregano flavor. You may also see Oregano onites listed as Greek oregano.

Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare hirtum): The true oregano for Mediterranean cooking, with excellent flavor and white flowers. Watch out for the impostor (called wild marjoram) with pink flowers and no flavor.

Greek oregano, O. vulgare subsp. hirtum (a.k.a. O. heracleoticum), is the popular culinary herb. It has hairy leaves and bracts, and white flowers. O. vulgare 'Viride', with white flowers and green bracts, also is used as a culinary herb.

Dwarf Greek oregano, or TriColor Marjoram (Origanum vulgare 'Variegata'), grows to about a five inch height, slowly spreading into a groundcover. It likes full sun to partial shade & is cold hardy to minus thirty.

The herb is sometimes called wild marjoram and is confused with marjoram, Origanum majorana, which is a smaller plant with a sweeter, milder flavor. Greek oregano is a variety, Origanum vulgare var. hirtum formerly called Origanum heracleoticum.

It grows to 2 feet tall, with small rounded leaves and pale pink flowers. Plant oregano in full sun and well-drained soil. Greek oregano (Origanum heracleoticum) is highly prized for its sharp, biting oregano taste.
