Greens
A generic name given to several types of leafy vegetables such as spinach, mustard greens, escarole, dandelion, and turnip greens that are often used in salads.

'Greensleeves' - an outstanding new variety that is reliable and hardy. It crops a little earlier than most and produces medium sized fruits in great abundance. Ready to harvest in September.

Evergreens for the Patio
There are some spectacular evergreen shrubs that grow very well in containers. For round-the-year interest include one or two plants that flower at differing times.

Cool-season salad greens are often sold in standard cell-packs, ready to plant. The pack will fit nicely in an 8-inch square box edged with tissue paper.

The success or failure of a houseplant usually boils down to two things -- selecting the right plant for the location and then giving it the care it requires in that location.

Greens (Mustard, Turnip, Kale): Harvest entire plants (or outer leaves for continuous harvest) when leaves reach suitable size (6 to 10 inches long) and before they start to yellow. Wash, dry and chill immediately.

Turnip greens are popular in the American South; they are cooked like spinach, sometimes with the roots chopped up and mixed in with the greens.

Noteworthy characteristics: Winter bark color is shown to best effect against a background of dark evergreens. Plants are easy to prune and keep within bounds.

Like many other broadleaf evergreens, locating this plant in partial sun and away from exposed, windy sites is important. Make sure camellias receive adequate water in the fall and early winter to minimize leaf drying.

Its name is from Latin caulis (cabbage) and flower, an acknowledgment of its unusual place among a family of food plants which normally produces only leafy greens for eating.
