Soils: Hardy kiwi prefer well-drained, somewhat acid (pH 5 - 6.5) soils. Neutral soils are acceptable but the leaves may show nitrogen deficiency when the soils become too basic. The plants will not tolerate salty soils.

 


Hardy kiwi does fruit very well on Puget Sound. Young plants usually don't start producing fruit until their third or fourth year. Thereafter new canes produce many fruits in the given cane's second year.

Hardy kiwi generally bloom in May and June. A hardy plant will produce between five to ten (5 to 10) gallons of fruit each year. Fruit should be picked as it softens, though like store purchased fruit, will ripen on the counter indoors.

Hardy kiwi vines are vulnerable to several botanical diseases, including phytophthora crown and root rot (the most serious problem), botrytis rot, and sclerotinia blight.

Actinidia arguta and Actinidia kolomikta are cold hardy kiwi which can survive temperatures of -25 degrees F. The fruit size is considerably smaller than that of A. deliciosa and is about the size of a large cherry. The skin of A.

A. arguta 'Issai' (hardy kiwi): Small fruits about the size of a grape ripen in July or August and can be eaten whole. Actinidia arguta is self-fertile and requires the same growing conditions as other kiwis.
