Heliotrope is a Mediterranean genus from the Borage family (Boraginaceae). They are mostly annual to biannual herbs with quite large, hairy leaves and terminal flower spikes, which are elongating with time.

Heliotrope has a compact form with broadly oval to lance-shaped, wrinkled leaves tinged with purple. In summer, it bears a profusion of deep violet-blue or lavender-blue flowerheads up to 6 inches across.

Bristly Heliotrope is a prostrate to rising or erect and up to 28 cm tall perennial herb. Stems are usually much branched from the base, appressed hairy.

Most Heliotropes come from Central and South America including the garden plants. There are several species native to southern Florida and a few introduced species found in our area that are usually considered weeds.

Grown for their attractive foliage and beautiful, fragrant flowers, these are short lived plants which are generally treated as an annual.

A sweet-scented plant which is called Heliotrope because it follows the course of the sun. After opening it gradually turns from the east to the west and during the night turns again to the east to meet the rising sun.

Common heliotrope is often prized for its fragrance, but sometimes only for its color. My garden contains a white heliotrope variety (H. arborescens 'Alba') an old-fashioned variety graced with the enticing scent of vanilla.

Scented: heliotrope, Lobularia maritima (alyssum), Matthiola (stocks), nemesia, Nicotiana (tobacco plant).
Hot tropical: begonia (tuberous), bidens, canna, coleus, gazania, lantana, Tagetes (French and African marigolds).

Grow heliotropes in the annual flower bed. This is a popular flower for porch planters and window boxes. Heliotropes are especially nice when grown in containers up high enough so that the sweet fragrance of the flowers can be appreciated.
