Hemp Plant (Cannabis Sativa)
A vigorous annual largely cultivated for its fibre. In England it is 4 to 10 feet high, but in Italy sometimes 20 feet high. In plants growing singly the stem is much branched, but in masses is generally simple.

HEMP, a tough fibre yielded by the large annual plant Cannabis sativa, of the natural order Cannabinaceae. There are, however, several other fibres known in commerce to which the term is more or less commonly applied.

Large evergreen shrub or small upright tree with hairy stems. Leaves are borne on long stalks, are round, palmately lobed, and hairy.

The coarse fibers are called "manilla hemp" and are used to make paper and rope. The fine fibers are used to make high quality cloth called banana cloth. Banana leaves are waterproof and are often used to wrap food for storage or cooking.

Peaches, bananas, avocados, kapok, hemp and latex are some other plants which depend on bats for pollination. In Southeast Asia some of the largest caves with bat colonies are being destroyed by limestone quarrying.

One of the common names for sansevieria is bow-string hemp, taken from the fact that Africans used the fibers from the plant to produce the strings for their bows.

It is the leading commercial variety of Sansevieria. It is grown for the hemp-like fiber in the leaves, which is called bowstring hemp. They are an attractive plant for pot culture and are very durable to a wide range of condition.

The seeds were used in France and Switzerland for whitening hemp, flax, silk, and wool and can also dye fabrics a sky-blue color. The conkers placed in the corners of a room are rumored to keep spiders away.

But for this feature, the plant can be confused with Deccan Hemp. The capsules are hairy and ovoid. The seeds are downy. Bush Sorrel is found throughout the tropical world. Its leaves are commonly used as pot-herb in many parts of Africa and Asia.

At the moment I'm thinking I would like to add "Crow Feather" which develops an unusually striking winter coloration, & "Black Snowflake" which has such deep-cut leaves it almost looks like hemp, adding blue-black hearts.
