Highbush Cranberry (Cranberry Viburnum)
Viburnum opulus var. americanum (Viburnum trilobum)
Highbush cranberry is not related to true cranberries; the name comes from its tart, edible red fruits. The showy outer flowers are sterile.
The autumn (2003) leaves of 'Onondaga' Highbush Cranberry
are maroon, as they were upon first emerging
early in the spring. This portrait shows it during its
first autumn in our garden, still a small but awfully attractive shrub.

I planted T. 'Forest Frost' at the edge of a hedge of Viburnum trilobum (highbush cranberry) along with other woodland perennials and ferns. Another great fringe cup you can see is Tellima grandiflora.
