Red Horse Chestnut
The large, dense, pyramidal shape of this tree is echoed in its many flower panicles. The inedible brown fruit of these Horse Chestnuts or Buckeyes holds slightly toxic, glossy seeds. Can also be grown as a shrub.

When in flower this tree is magnificent with its large cones of red flowers that are seated atop large clusters of shiny, dark green, palmate leaves. The flowers come during sping.

Known as one parent of the popular red horse chestnut, red buckeye itself is uncommon. The only one noted on campus is a few yards northwest of the northwest corner of Littlefield Center (in the direction of Albers Wall).

Huge, vigorous deciduous tree. Compound leaves are medium green with a herringbone pattern. Small white flowers with pink markings bloom in late spring in erect conical clusters of a few dozen flowers each.
