Hydrangea planting in the fall gives plants time to set down strong roots while avoiding the draining heat of summer. Hydrangeas are perhaps one of the easiest shrubs to grow.

This is a wide-ranging group of evergreens and climbing species that includes the old-fashioned, ever-popular deciduous shrub.

Hydrangea serrata can be pruned in the same way as mophead and lacecap hydrangeas.
Hydrangea paniculata and H. arborescens are treated differently.

A Hydrangea for Sun
While most hydrangeas do best in shade, varieties of Hydrangea paniculata prefer sunny spots. Most selections have large clusters of white flowers in summer.

'All Summer Beauty' is a 3 to 4 foot shrub that produces prolific flowers in a rich blue in acid soil. It may produce flowers on new growth.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Merritt's Beauty' is a fast growing deciduous shrub that can quickly reach a height of 4-6' with an equal spread. This shrub like most Hydrangeas is grown for it's flowers.

Hydrangea needs _cold_ period to bloom, i.e 10-13C in winter. Does yor climate satisfy this condition? Hydrangea forms the buds in cold rest period only.

Hydrangea anomala is planted in the highlighted USDA hardiness zones to the left and is not known to widely escape cultivaton.

Hydrangea comes from the Greek words hydor for water and aggos for jar, which refers to the cup-shaped fruit. The name for the species, quercifolia, comes from the Latin word quercus (pronounced KWER-kus) for oak.

The Hydrangea family includes mostly bushes with showy flowers. You might have a mock orange growing in your yard, or if you live far enough south, you might have a hydrangea.

Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snow Queen'
Oak-leaf Hydrangea
Medium-sized, bushy decidous shrub, growing to about 6 feet high and 6 feet diameter. White, cone-shaped flowers throughout the summer.

Hydrangea macrophylla is hardy to zone 8, however temperatures below 25 degrees F. will kill the new buds.

Hydrangeas will grow quite happily in alkaline soils but you will not get blue flowers. In limey soils the aluminium that the Hydrangea needs to produce blue flowers is locked up so the flowers turn out pink.

Hydrangea macrophylla types and also Hydrangeas paniculata. Will tolerate waterlogged conditions for a while - as long as the soil is capable of drying out.

Fruits: Capsules obovoid, longitudinally ribbed, up to 1/5 inch long, with the style persistent; seeds linear, shiny, yellow, up to 1/10 inch long.
