Hypoxis - Low-growing plants, mostly natives of S. Africa. They have grassy foliage and yellow flowers, are tender, but are sometimes planted out in summer, in light, sandy soil, in warm borders.

Similar Species: Wright's Star-Grass (Hypoxis wrightii) AKA (Hypoxis micrantha) has shorter leaves only to 3mm (0.1") wide with three main veins and usually only one or two flowers.

Hypoxis hirsuta is a dainty little cormous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family. It is a native of the East Coast of the U.S. and grows in meadows and open woods from Maine to Florida and west to Kansas.

Phylogeny. Kocyan et al. (2011) recovered three main clades - Curculigo et al., Pauridia et al., and Hypoxis - in the family, a slight modification of the results obtained by Rudall et al. (1998). Relationships between these clades was unclear.
