This group includes perennial low shrubs and plants grown for their leaves and used in bedding, containers and borders. The annuals, such as the commonly planted Strawflower, are mainstays for dried arrangements.

The name curry plant is often used for Helichrysum italicum (Asteraceae), a relative of immortelle; several subspecies grow in the European Medi­terranean countries.

A garden of pleasant annual flowers is not complete that does not contain some of the "everlastings" or immortelles. These "paper flowers" are always interesting to children.
