Impatiens capensis
Jewelweed is an entertaining plant. The ripe seedpods pop open at a gentle touch, hence the name touch-me-not. Water drops bead up on the leaves, and a leaf held underwater has a silver sheen.
Similar Species: Pale Touch-me-not, Impatiens pallida is very similar. It has yellowish flowers and is slightly larger in every respect. It has a more northerly range being found only as far south as the mountains of Georgia.

There isn't a huge difference between the various available Impatiens series: they are all bred for compact growth and non-stop flower production. My current favourite is Dazzler White.
It is not unusual for the green and white variegated sultana (impatiens) to have albino shoots. This house plant roots easily from cuttings but I have never been able to get the white cuttings to make roots.

It is found in some species of Oxalis, Impatiens, Campanula, Eranthemum, etc. Such plants are called cleistogamous and are all self-fertilizing.
They are not plants which can be crammed into a hole dug in unprepared garden soil...save your money for impatiens if this is your level of gardening. If, on the other hand, you like a real challenge, Cypripedium orchids are for you.
grow equally well in containers and pair nicely with ferns and other soft textured plants like astilbe, with spiky leaved plants such as ornamental grasses and shade tolerant iris and with coordinating colored blooms of fuchsia and Impatiens.
