Four O'Clocks were one of my Grandfather's favorites. He enjoyed the bright trumpet shaped flowers. Four O'Clocks got their name because it opens in mid-afternoon. It remains open overnight, and closes in early morning.

Another name for it is Wild Jalap, due to the cathartic & purgative medicinal qualities similar to jalap (Ipomoea jalapa).
The name "jalapa" is due to botanical confusion. The fleshy roots of this plant were thought to be the source of "jalapa," a drug that was used in Central and South America as a laxative.
Last year I planted 3 Jalapeno Plants in the same bed as some Cantalope Plants. I also had Endive growing in that bed as well but I harvested that early.
Hot peppers, except for jalapenos, are allowed to ripen and change colors on the plant. Jalapeno peppers should be harvested when the fruit turn black-green. Entire plants may be pulled and hung just before full frosts.
Herbalists talk about Jalap and Black Haw, but to the uninitiated Bindweed and Guelder Rose are far more familiar, and it is under these names that they will be found in this herbal.
Bell peppers, chili peppers, jalapeno peppers, paprika and tabasco all come from the Capsicum genus. Physalis is the tomatillo. Solanum includes the potato and eggplant. Belladonna is Atropa, while the petunia flower is from the genus Petunia.

If it did not light one's mouth on fire it would be almost insignificant; because of its exciting ability it stands out from its kindred. Nibbled raw, it recalls the effect of jalapeno peppers on the throat.

The Four o'clock of flower gardens is Marvel of Peru (Mirabilis jalapa). It sometimes escapes cultivation and establishes itself.
